FOR PARENTS
We welcome your son/daughter to UNC Charlotte to begin this
new phase in life. The staff at the Office of Disability Services applauds your
great energy and advocacy in helping them to reach this milestone. Our approach
to working with your son/daughter is one that involves promoting independence
and self-advocacy. Our goal is to help each student have a positive college
experience by ensuring equal access to academic programs and promoting inclusion
across the university.
To help reach this goal, each student is responsible for
making an appointment with one of our counselors at the beginning of each
semester. During this appointment, the student and counselor will discuss
appropriate accommodations for each semester based on his/her specific
disability and course work load. We also encourage students to maintain contact
with the Office of Disability Services to notify us of any additional
accommodation needs that may occur during the semester.
Students may not begin college with the self-knowledge and
advocacy skills that will be necessary later in life, but as each student
advances through his/her college career, we encourage them to be their own best
self-advocate as they prepare to enter the professional world. It has been our
experience that students are successful with this endeavor. This has been
demonstrated by their ability to converse and express their individual needs
with the Office of Disability Services staff, their professors, and other people
involved in their educational growth.
Each student’s privacy is of utmost importance.
Confidentiality is provided and protected by a privacy act known as FERPA
(Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). Under no circumstances will a
student’s disability related information be disclosed to anyone without the
student’s informed and written consent.
If you have any questions regarding the services or specific
accommodations provided by the Office of Disability Services at UNC Charlotte,
