Your Rights and Responsibilities
January 2007
The Office of Disability Services provides support to faculty and staff.
Therefore we hope this serves as a guide to your rights and responsibilities
when
working with students with disabilities.
Rights:
• Expect all students to adhere to the student code of conduct
• Deny accommodations if the Letter of Accommodation is not provided, current,
or initialed by a Disability Services counselor
• Contact Disability Services staff with concerns or questions regarding
approved accommodations
• Consult Disability Services if accommodations appear to alter core
requirements of the course
Responsibilities:
• Maintain confidentiality regarding students who have disabilities
• Include an ADA statement on syllabi
• Refer students who report a disability to the Office of Disability Services
• Collaborate with Disability Services staff to ensure student accommodations
• Provide accommodations when an accommodation letter has been received
• Maintain a non-biased tone in classroom; avoid comments or humor about
disabilities that may be perceived as derisive
• Use a Universal Design approach to teaching coursework when possible

Sample ADA statement:
“If you have a disability that qualifies you for academic accommodations, please
provide a letter of accommodation from the Office of Disability Services in the
beginning of the semester. For more information regarding accommodations, please
contact the Office of Disability Services at 704-687-4355 or stop by their
office in 230 Fretwell.”
